Spring is for new changes

Dear Reader,

You don't care about the minutiae of my life. I get that. You are here for the free books and information about exciting fiction.

But this is still my newsletter, which means I can only share the news I have. And for me Spring is always a season of changes and I am here to note some of those.

And yes, I know some of you are heading into winter, but her in sunny South Africa it is mid-spring, and it is hot!

Changes to note:

I have stopped my current subscription to StoryOrigin. This might mean nothing to you, except that it is the source of the free promotions and story downloads that had been part of my newsletter. There will no longer be free stories promoted that way. If this change in the future I will let you know.

The books I may promote, or talk about, are books that I actually read. Because, shocker, I do not actually read any eBooks. It is not that I have any objection to the eBook as a format, or anybody else's preference. I just can't read a book digitally. Without paper and a physical object it does not keep my interest.

So if I want to read a book, and talk about it after, I need to have a physical copy. Which is also why I do not want to promote the StoryOrigin bundles anymore. I cannot read the books and therefore I have no opinion about them and that means any promotion of them is just a scattergun approach.

But I digress.

So, those are the main changes that will be relevant for Novel Notes. And those changes will most likely mean that some of my subscribers no longer find any value in receiving my newsletter. If that is you, please do unsubscribe and go find what you need where you have to. Thanks for trailing along this far.

For those that remain, I have just reread Terry Pratchett's The Colour of Magic.

Now, I have heard people say that it is not the right book to get introduced to Discworld. But I must say, for me the book has held up very well. It just does not follow a conventional novel format. What the book is is a series of four consecutive novellas that recount the travels of Rincewind and Twoflower, or at least the mayor highlights and lowlights.

If you have never read the book, or anything from Terry Pratchett, contrary to popular wisdom, I think this is a good as place as any to start.

When Oceans Dream at Plaatjieskraal

Dear Reader, It is always nice to find a book that excites you and then take it home. It is a little present between covers that you can savour at your leisure. But when I says taking a book home here I mean taking a book back to the place that made it what it is. When Oceans Dream is set in the Overberg in the Western Cape in a small coastal village called Plaatjieskraal. This is both a real place, and nowhere at all. Plaatjieskraal is a ghost town and the former settlement had been...

Run Toward Ruin cover

Dear Reader, I have a new novel on the way. Drafting is going very well because I am releasing it as a serial as I am writing. What is the story about? Run Toward Ruin Every year, the five families gather for a conclave to determine the affairs of the Prince they have served for generations. While the families debate the work of the coming year, Darius’s crippled grandfather pursues a far darker goal: overthrowing the Prince and seizing power for himself. Trapped in the old man’s service,...

Way Up Here short story cover

Dear Reader, As you would know, when you sign up for a newsletter you might receive a series of welcome emails. It all depends on how the newsletter was set up. I have not paid much attention to it and have, I think, only had a welcome email that confuses more than anything else. I have a collection of short stories I have written over a time period of about fifteen years and I have decided to send these all out as a long running free fiction welcome sequence. Not all of them really, one of...
