Dear Reader, I'm writing to let you know about a few changes I'm making next year—all of them designed to give me more space to focus on what matters most: the writing itself. For nearly twenty years, writing has been a process of experimentation. Every book is its own project, its own challenge. That exploration is what keeps the work exciting. But it also requires focus—and I've realized that even my minimal marketing efforts have been pulling energy away from the page. So here's what's changing:Midnight Thesis is coming off the weekly serial schedule. There's enough on the site now to serve as a teaser. I won't be adding more chapters for the time being. https://gerhijansevanvuuren.com/midnight-thesis/ No regular blog posts. I'll only post simple announcements when a new novel is published. Novel Notes is staying—but streamlined. You'll still hear from me every second Thursday of the month with a short update on my writing progress and news about anything newly published. I'll include no more than three promotions per month. One newsletter per month. That's it. In 2025, I sometimes resent newsletters to people who didn't open them. I won't be doing that in 2026. You'll receive twelve newsletters total this year—one per month, no extras, no sale announcements. This isn't about stepping back from you. It's about stepping forward into the work. You'll still know when new books are out. You'll still get updates. But the bulk of my time will be where it should be—on the stories themselves. Thank you for being part of this. I'll see you in the next novel. *** My Novels available on AmazonWhen Oceans Dream (pre-order) *** This Month's Free Stories to ReadShort stories, novellas, or even full novels to download when signing up to the author's mailing list. Dear Reader, You don't care about the minutiae of my life. I get that. You are here for the free books and information about exciting fiction. But this is still my newsletter, which means I can only share the news I have. And for me Spring is always a season of changes and I am here to note some of those. And yes, I know some of you are heading into winter, but her in sunny South Africa it is mid-spring, and it is hot! Changes to note: I have stopped my current subscription to StoryOrigin....
Dear Reader, It is always nice to find a book that excites you and then take it home. It is a little present between covers that you can savour at your leisure. But when I says taking a book home here I mean taking a book back to the place that made it what it is. When Oceans Dream is set in the Overberg in the Western Cape in a small coastal village called Plaatjieskraal. This is both a real place, and nowhere at all. Plaatjieskraal is a ghost town and the former settlement had been...
Dear Reader, I have a new novel on the way. Drafting is going very well because I am releasing it as a serial as I am writing. What is the story about? Run Toward Ruin Every year, the five families gather for a conclave to determine the affairs of the Prince they have served for generations. While the families debate the work of the coming year, Darius’s crippled grandfather pursues a far darker goal: overthrowing the Prince and seizing power for himself. Trapped in the old man’s service,...
