Dear Reader, When you scroll through lists of fiction, as you might do on any online book retailer, you will frequently find books that have a subtitle: "A Novel". Those people must be idiots, right? Of course we know it is a novel. It is a long book with a written story, as anybody can see. Well, actually, it isn't. I am dipping back into Philip Stevick's anthology The Theory of the Novel. In here is an artcile by Northrop Frye where he explains The Four Forms of Fiction. I'm not going to go theoretical here and expound on his whole argument, I'm only going to paraphrase, and explain in simple terms how I see it. These are the four forms of fiction:
An anatomy would be mostly works of comedy, satire, philosophical sci-fi, and all the parodies. Confessions are all those autobiographies, and every story where the author insert themselves for a pity party. Also True Crime, I think. Romance is all the heroic stuff with bucket loads of wish fulfilment going from Billionaire Romance to Spy Thrillers--basically everything that is labelled genre fiction and which you are told to not look down upon because it is real fiction. And then there are novels, that tries to truthfully show us who we are. My book When Oceans Dream is a novel (That's why I put it on the cover). The characters are not heroes. There is no dwelling on past regrets (not much) and I'm not asking the reader to sit in judgement. I wanted to write a story about how it is. With some fantastical apocalyptic elements added. What I'm struggling with now is what to write next now that I have dealt with reality and the end of the world as we know it. More on that next month. *** My Novels available on Amazon/WideWhen Oceans DreamThe Seventh Kill*** This Month's Reading PromosThe Volcan Knights: OriginsLaurie Bowler When darkness bleeds into reality, five immortal warriors stand between humanity and cosmic annihilation. Dear Reader, You don't care about the minutiae of my life. I get that. You are here for the free books and information about exciting fiction. But this is still my newsletter, which means I can only share the news I have. And for me Spring is always a season of changes and I am here to note some of those. And yes, I know some of you are heading into winter, but her in sunny South Africa it is mid-spring, and it is hot! Changes to note: I have stopped my current subscription to StoryOrigin....
Dear Reader, It is always nice to find a book that excites you and then take it home. It is a little present between covers that you can savour at your leisure. But when I says taking a book home here I mean taking a book back to the place that made it what it is. When Oceans Dream is set in the Overberg in the Western Cape in a small coastal village called Plaatjieskraal. This is both a real place, and nowhere at all. Plaatjieskraal is a ghost town and the former settlement had been...
Dear Reader, I have a new novel on the way. Drafting is going very well because I am releasing it as a serial as I am writing. What is the story about? Run Toward Ruin Every year, the five families gather for a conclave to determine the affairs of the Prince they have served for generations. While the families debate the work of the coming year, Darius’s crippled grandfather pursues a far darker goal: overthrowing the Prince and seizing power for himself. Trapped in the old man’s service,...
